Welcome aboard - I can’t promise it will be an exciting ride but hopefully we’ll have a few laughs along the way.

I’m going to cover a ton of shit (with a little luck) over the next few years and along with that I’m hoping we can all learn a thing or two. Things like; why it’s a totally useless effort to try to run a mail server from your house, how I plan on capturing network traffic and forensic evidence on honeypots, setting up Guacamole which will, absolutely guaranteed, get my whole network owned as fuck. Maybe because of vulns I wasn’t aware of but honestly more likely due to my poor configuration of the tool. =)

I started this blog and website with a few things in mind:

  • I’ve owned timothyfwebster.com forever and if I’m going to pay $10 a year for this stupid thing I’m going to use it.
  • I just bought a used server so I’m going through the growing pains of setting up my home lab.
  • I’m doing a ton of shit from the ground up because I’ve never done it before and I have a crippling need to learn how every single thing on the planet works.
  • Hopefully someone else learns something from my pain, tears, beers, and wasted efforts.

I started out in security the hard way - I had no mentors, a bit of experience, and few people to learn from. I essentially kept banging my head against the wall until something clicked and so maybe, just maybe, through this blog I can prevent a few repetitions or head trauma for someone else.
